Faith Formation

Saint Kilian Faith Formation is centered on the development of true spiritual values, and the encouragement of the attitudes, understanding and behaviors of a member of the Catholic community. Our goal is to help your child to reach Jesus: to know that he/she is especially loved and valued by Christ.

Complete information is available below by clicking on the applicable boxes. Deacon Ralph Bachner is the Director of Faith Formation at Saint Kilian Parish and can be reached at rbachner@saintkilian.org or via phone at 724-625-1665 x.2103.

Catechetical Classes and Programs (CCD)

Our catechetical programs begin in Grade 1 and extend to Grade 8. Students who complete this program of studies are thus prepared to complete initiation into the Catholic faith through the sacrament of Confirmation in Grade 8.

Faith Formation Program Offerings and Options

In our on-site programs, students attend CCD in classrooms located in the Saint Kilian Parish Center. They share classroom space with Saint Kilian Parish School (Pre-K to 8) and have access to much of the technology provided in the building. We also offer a Family Centered Program. The Diocese of Pittsburgh curriculum will be followed through the Loyola Press, Finding God textbook series for grades 1 through 7 and  the Ascension Press, Chosen textbook for grade 8.

Mandatory Parent / Child Meetings for Grades 1 - 4

All meetings will be held in the church hall located in the basement of the Church from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. These gatherings provide seasonal catechesis as well as hands-on interactive parent/child projects. At least one parent must attend these meetings with their child; each session will be offered twice to help accommodate parent schedules. Siblings are welcome to sit in at any meeting. Meetings dates are:

  1. Tuesday, September 27 or Wednesday, September 28, 2016 (Church Hall)
  2. Monday, November 28 or Tuesday, November 29, 2016 (Church Hall)
  3. Tuesday, January 31 or Thursday, February 2, 2017 (Church Hall)
  4. Monday, April 3 or Tuesday, April 4, 2017 (Church Hall)
  5. Monday, May 22, or Tuesday, May 23, 2017 (Church Hall)

For Grades 1-4, homework batches are to be turned in at each of the above meetings. For grades 5-8 homework can be turned in at any Family Centered meeting, Jr. SKY meeting, or by turning it in at the front office, ATTN: Jo Scheller during regular parish office hours. All homework for the year is due by May 30, 2017.

Jr. SKY Requirement for Grades 5 - 8
Jr. SKY is our youth ministry program and meets twice a month, with a mix of social, service and catechetical events. Students in Grades 5-8 are required* to attend three (3) Jr. SKY sessions of their choosing throughout the 2016 - 2017 year. Events beginning July 1, 2016 through Jr. SKY count towards the required three (3) sessions for the 2016 - 2017 year (this includes social events, regular meeting nights, and the monthly St. John’s Bingo service project). Attendance is taken at these sessions and is recorded to track participation. No write-ups are required for those who attend the group activities planned through Jr. SKY. Permission to participate in Jr. SKY is required - a separate emergency/registration form is used during all meetings. Click here to complete this form online (this is in addition to registering for your CCD/Faith Formation Program). Click here for more information regarding Jr. SKY and for the Jr. SKY schedule of meetings and events.

*Alternative Options for Fulfilling the Jr. SKY Requirement
Religious events or service activities may be substituted in place of the Jr. SKY required sessions. Ideas include: attending a Passion Play, visiting a Basilica or attending a religious concert (examples of religious events) OR volunteering at a food bank like the Kilian Cupboard, collecting items for donation from your neighbors, visiting a nursing home, making fleece blankets (examples of service projects), etc. Each activity can count as a substitution for a Jr. SKY event. When the student has completed their alternative activity, they will need to email a paragraph of reflection to Jo Scheller with a summary of the completed activity or project, what they thought about the experience, and how it is pertinent to their faith life. Once received, an email confirmation will be sent to let you know that the event has been recorded.
